Both Ascension & Rape and Pillage were site specific installations created for Song for Women Living With War at ProArts Gallery (November 2016)

Ascension

The text, “We are so used to seeing women as victims of war to be pitied rather than survivors of war to be respected” is from writer and journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, known for her work (fiction and non-fiction) about women around the world living and experiencing the challenges of war. The quote, adhered to the risers of the gallery steps, is visible only when you approach to ascend them. This placement is meant to evoke the strength of women transcending the damages of war.

Rape Pillage

The term “Rape and Pillage” is a reputation derived from the Vikings (late 8th century to the early 11th century) and is, unfortunately, a wartime strategy still practiced today. The piece is comprised of dissected soldiers reifying the significance of the atrocities of war.
