Interstices

Interstice: 2018-2019
Video Projection (duration: 4:10)
*VR accompaniment (duration: 2:26)

Interstice evokes the fragmented nature of remembering and sharing trauma. During the process of this project and current day events (including Dr. Blasey Ford’s testimony and the #metoo movement), I was inspired by how traumatic experiences are told, interpreted and understood. In this, I realized several truths can exist and our capacity for survival is extensive. With Interstice, I attempt to translate this by compiling several vignettes of gestures that resonated for me while reading and listening to the shared text. Being drawn specifically to the non-linear structure of the events and the random nature of memory.

The VR accompaniment of Interstice is meant to be an atmospheric experience. The viewer is suspended within the fortress of nature, creating a sense of solace and invisibility. This brings her words of experience to the center of focus for the viewer to interpret.
