Cornering Culture
Cornering Culture (1995)
a video installation created for the Mail Order Brides show at Los Medanos College (Pittsburg, CA) circa 1995*
Cornering Culture offers commentary on the dis(similarities) of the meat packing industry in the U.S. and the practice of preparing dogs as a delicacy in the Philippines. Text borrowed from Homi K. Bhabha's "Location of Culture” flanks the viewer as they enter the space suddenly finding themselves 'cornered' by a visual composed of the slaughtering practice of the meat industry in the U.S. and the "primitive" slaughtering practices of meat in the Philippines, allowing the viewer to question the notion of "cultural differences"
many thanks to John Galang and Stephen Faulk, Sari Gilman and BAVC
